Castle Road was the venue for our U16 league semi-final on Wednesday last against Courcey Rovers. In the words of our president it was “heart testing stuff”.
Courceys opened the scoring with a point. Hannah Looney quickly replied to this with two points. Courceys replied again. Thanks to Sinead Landers we had a green flag raised in our favour. Hannah had point number three. Despite having our fair share of the play the ball did not seem to be going between the posts for us. Fresh from her All-Ireland success Chloe Sigerson broke the cycle with a point. Some fantastic saves by Ciara Motherway made sure the pressure from the Courcey backs was not resulting in scores. Sinead Landers had point number five. Courcey’s had their third to leave the halftime score 1-5 to 3points in our favour.
The second half began and Courcey’s hit a purple patch, within ten minutes they had the game levelled. The pressure was on us. The back line of Emma Tracey, Ava Burns and Niamh O Farrell stood tall. Ciara Barry and Amy Benaim upped their game and yet again the ever dependable Hannah put us two points up! Courceys then brought it back to one but Hanna put another over the bar. Courceys had two points and we were level yet again. The clock was ticking fast! Leah McEvoy scored a 45. Courceys levelled it. The tension on the sideline was unreal. Yet again it was Hannah to the rescue with the winning point as the whistle blew! The final score was 1-10 to 1-9.
In the words of the referee “it took character in a team to pull of this victory” which is what this bunch of girls have. A league final beckons as well as championship against Killbrittan/Timoleague.
