In very bad weather conditions our U16 team travelled to Newtownshandrum last Saturday. Many thanks to the many parents who made the long journey and also to the Netownshandrum club for the most welcome refreshments after the game. Newtown had the opening score of the game with a goal so we had to wake up quickly and this Leah McEvoy and Hannah Looney did by creating the first point jointly. Leah had our first goal and followed it up with a point. Hannah had goal number 2. Great defensive work was being done by the backs (Clodagh Tyrell, Niamh O Farrell and Emma Tracey) to keep Newtown out. Ciara O Connor netted a great free by Leah to give us a third goal.Fantastic accuracy on a wet windy day saw Chloe Sigerson score 3 lovely points. Newtown pointed a 45 and then got their second goal. History then was made, when Leah McEvoy became the first girl to point a sideline and be awarded the new ruled 2 points. Well done Leah, we hope it's the first of many! That left the half time score 3-8 to 2-1.
As with the first half Newtown opened with a goal. A word of advice from Mattie on the side line and Zoe, Ellen Benim and Elaine Terry, Ava Burns, upped their game and drove more ball came up the field. Nessa and Ciara Daly passed some lovely balls to Leah and Hannah who finished them over the bar. Ciara Motherway made some great saves between the posts. Aisling Daly and Jill worked hard inside to hold the ball and overall fantastic team work secured us victory 4-13 to 3-1.
With a win like that nobody realized how wet they were!
