Senior Summer Cup final

posted 25 Nov 2012, 13:20 by Pro Killeagh Camogie

It was ironic that the ground was freezing beneath our feet on friday night last as we took to the pitch at Pairc i Cheinneide to contest the Summer Cup final. We won the inaugral one last year so were eager to put our name on the trophy again this year. Ballincollig were our opponents.
On her last night out as captain Noelle o Donovan opened our scoring with a point, Angela Walsh followed this up quickly with a goal to settle us down. Ballingcollig pointed . Mary o Connor ( proving that her dublin job wasn't interfering with her hurling skills)delivered some great ball into the forward line of Jess Swayne,Angela Walsh and Kate Murphy and it was used t it full potential by Kate in scoring a goal and a point.Gillian Cunningham working hard on the night set up Angela Walsh for a point. Ballingcollig got a grip on the game and scored 3 points on the trot before half time to leave the half time score 2-4 to four points.
Ballingcollig started the second half so strong as they finished the first and had three points on the board without a reply from us. It was looking dangerous.Shauna Landers had a great night between the posts and brought off some marvelous saves.she was given great cover by Maire Smiddy,Aoife Walsh and Ann Maire Walsh. Annie Walsh displayed great fitness and skill as she delivered some great ball up to Noelle and Aideen Walsh who in turn took it into Angela and Kate to create a further two goals. ballingcollig got a further point and then a goal but the lead we built up in the first half stood to us as we ran out winners 4-4 to 1-8
Mairead O Donovan county Development officer presented the Summer Cup to our great captain Noelle who in her speech thanked Kevin O Connor and JP Murphy for all the long hours of work they had put in with the team. The welcome cup of tea helped thaw out the many frozen bodies and it also helped us celebrate the birthday of a great team member Olive Griffen. Birthday greetings also to our president Sheila Spillane who was busy with her dogs on the night kept in phone contact with the game.
