Juvenile Notes: Minors Come Up Short In Deluge Premier 1 Minor Hurling League Final Douglas 59, KilleaghIta’s 48 Our brave minor hurling team finished their long 2014 campaign on Saturday last in Ballinlough. Unfortunately for both teams and their diehard supporters, the game was played in an unrelenting barrage of wind and rain, which made conditions on the pitch almost unplayable, and off the pitch very uncomfortable. Well done to the supporters for sticking it out under absolutely no shelter, and well done to both teams for giving 100% on a truly awful day for hurling. Striking the ball cleanly was almost impossible, players slipped and slid all over the place, and yet we saw some fantastic scores, great high fielding and blocking, and ultimately victory to Douglas by virtue of their strong display from the 45 point lead (59 to 38). In spite of Shane Smiddy’s late goal (just reward for an outstanding display, particularly in the second half when he plucked four balls from the sky in seemingly impossible situations), we were unable to close the gap any further. Well done to this panel of players and to their management team of Niall, Colm and Brendan who have collectively given the minute, when they turned a two point deficit (43 to 38) into a seven to 55 outstanding service this year. While the rewards for 2014 are not immediately apparent, the rewards for the club in the medium and long term from this fine crop of players should be great.
